EMDR intensives
In addition to weekly or fortnightly sessions, I also offer half day (3.5 hours) or full day (7 hours) EMDR intensives. These are offered as either a short-term treatment option (generally for single event traumas or stressors) or as an adjunct to a longer, more traditional therapy model.
EMDR intensives have a number of potential advantages over a more traditional treatment model (typically, 50-60 minute weekly sessions):
– They are more time efficient, as less time is spent ‘checking in’ at the start of the session and on closing down processes at the end of the session.
– They can be less disruptive to daily life, both in terms of diary management and also reducing the process of repeatedly shifting between processing trauma and the return to everyday life.
– They tend to be highly focused, and allow for goals to be reached in a much shorter period of time.
The research on EMDR intensives as a state-of-the-art trauma treatment modality is very encouraging, indicating equivalent outcomes to traditional therapy, but in a much shorter period of time.
When considering the option of an EMDR intensive, you may be concerned about processing traumatic memories for 3-4 consecutive hours. This is not the case: processing generally occurs in 40-70 minute blocks, with time taken to debrief, reflect, and relax in between.
Please note that EMDR intensities are not suitable for everybody, and at least one initial appointment will be needed to assess suitability and identify treatment goals prior to the scheduling of any intensives.
